Butterfly Of Pixelated Wing
Sculpture By The Sea
17.10.25 - 03.11.25

Butterflies provide a sense of wonder, curiosity and delight to those who witness them in fleeting encounters. Look up! Do you see them? This is a very rare sighting as this butterfly, the ‘Australian Fritillary’/Argynnis hyperbius inconstans’ is the most imperilled butterfly in Australia. Due to habitat loss, it could soon become extinct.

Having never encountered this butterfly in real life, I have attempted to understand it through a reality that exists for me as a collection of images on a computer screen. Through the process of zooming in and zooming out, the butterfly is reduced to a composition of pixels, colour blocks and shapes which have provided me with inspiration for this site specific installation.

Assembled from locally sourced recycled timber and combined with painterly colour, ‘Butterfly Of Pixelated Wing’ finds itself in a new habitat - where the dualities of the digital and analogue are explored and the interconnectedness of humans and nature in a fragile world is apparent.
